#2 Easy Readers in Serbian: Idemo dalje
If you prefer self-learning with the help of language books, then Idemo dalje edition can be your cup of tea.
Four different books cover levels from A1 to B1. It’s up to you (and your knowledge, of course) which one you’ll choose to start from.
One of the main facts about the Serbian language is that we use two alphabets – Cyrillic and Latin. In these books, you will find many short texts written in both alphabets!
#3 Easy Readers in Serbian: Agi i Ema
‘Agi and Ema’ is a short novel by Igor Kolarov, an author with numerous awards.
It is a story about an unusual friendship because these two people have a huge age difference. Agi is a 9-year-old boy, while Ema is an old, funny lady.
This novel has been translated into English, Russian, Italian, and French, allowing you to read some of these publications alongside the Serbian original. However, be cautious; this doesn’t mean you can replace the power of a dictionary, as translators may occasionally replace the original words.
There’s also a movie based on this book, which you can watch with subtitles.

#4 Easy Readers in Serbian: Ja sam Akiko
Ja sam Akiko, I or’ I am Akiko’, is written by Serbian writer Stefan Tićmi (Tićmi is derived from his last name Mitić).
The fun fact about this author is that he created a small library from an old house in the Ančiki area. There are more than 5000 books, and if someone wants to borrow them, it’s completely free.
Let’s get back to the book. It is available in both Cyrillic and Latin, so you can start with the Latin version. Once you become confident in Serbian, you can then learn or recall the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet by reading the Cyrillic version.
Ja sam Akiko is intended for parents and elementary school students. It is a book about a girl who doesn’t like boundaries. She seems unusual to others, and her life is about to change when she meets Baobab and Marsel.
It has a warm and charming note, so you will probably want to learn Serbian even faster, because you’ll want to understand it completely.
If you love Serbian movies, you will find a list of great ones to watch and learn Serbian at the end of this blog post.
#5 Easy Readers in Serbian: Leto kad sam naučila da letim
‘How I Learned to Fly’ is a touching book by Jasminka Petrović. The book rapidly became popular, and many more interesting books by this author are more than worth reading.
The main character of ‘How I learned to Fly’ is a teenage girl, Sofija. She is going on a summer vacation with her grandma to the island of Hvar in Croatia.
Since this journey doesn’t look like something that can thrill a teenage girl, she decided to spend her time reading and listening to music. But, soon, she realises that there are a lot of interesting people around her, and that life can become quite an adventure even when you don’t expect it.
Leto kada sam naučila da letim also has a movie version, so you can watch this fantastic movie and learn some Serbian and Croatian words, too.
#6 Easy Readers in Serbian: Osam soba naše slobode
The Eight Rooms of Our Freedom is a novel written by Serbian journalist and author Sonja Ćirić.
In this fascinating story, the main characters are eight children, four boys and four girls, who are isolated on the top of their building.
The reason for this was a virus, and those children who weren’t infected had to be separated from others. Initially, they were all outrageous and angry, but as time passed, they began to discover their talents and other characteristics.
This is another Serbian book with quite an intriguing plot, so reading in Serbian will be more interesting than you expect.

#7 Easy Readers in Serbian: #Izazov
‘#challenge’ is the third book of Serbian writer Danica Bogojević.
For this teenage novel, she picked a very popular topic about social media networks and teenagers. The main character is a girl, Ema, who says: ‘I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought that out of so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me, who feels the way I do.’
She decides to run away from her current surroundings and find who she truly is.
This is a story about growing up, friendships and, as the title says, challenges in a modern world.
